Who was the first prime minister of Canada?

John A Macdonald was the first prime minister (1867–1873) of Canada. He was born in Scotland and immigrated to Upper Canada as a young man. In 1841 he became a member of parliament representing York County, Ontario. After serving as a cabinet minister under Sir George Brown, he was elected speaker of the House of Commons in 1857. He served as premier of Canada until his death in 1891.
