Are dinosaurs reptiles ?

Yes. Dinosaurs are reptiles, who lived during the Secondary Era (230 to 65 million years ago). Like crocodiles, their distant cousins, they had their bodies covered with scales, and they laid eggs.

I’m glad you asked, dinosaurs were reptiles and they were very large (some were over 40 feet tall!). They lived on land during the secondary era (230 to 65 million years ago), and some scientists believe that they may have evolved into birds! We all know that crocodiles are dinosaurs’ distant cousins, and they have kept their bodies covered with scales. Another interesting fact about dinosaurs is that they laid eggs and lived exclusively on dry land instead of in water like whales or dolphins.

The age of dinosaurs is divided into three eras: Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous. Dinosaurs have been known to have lived since 230 million years ago. Most belong to the order Saurischia, which means โ€˜lizard-hippedโ€™ (the forelimbs form an upright triangle when compared with the hind limbs). We can find the imprints of their feet, but no complete skeletons that would allow us to build them up as we do for mammals and birds. The fossils of dinosaurs are very abundant in some formations all over the world.

Why dinosaur extincts ?

The giant dinosaurs lived a long time ago: around 220 million years. They were at their peak during the Mesozoic era, between 220 and 65 million years ago. They died out suddenly, along with many other species living on land (many trees), in the air (flying reptiles) and in the seas (marine reptiles, ammonites… ) There are many theories about why they disappeared but researchers continue to investigate this mystery.

An extinction caused by volcanic activity?

The extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago is a mystery. Many theories have been proposed but none has been proven so far. One of these theories is that large volcanic eruptions led to the death of many species such as ammonites and marine reptiles and put an end to their reign on Earth.

An asteroid extinction?

The second theory is that an asteroid hit Earth at this time, causing a tidal wave that devastated the coasts of America and killing all dinosaurs in a few hours by burning down forests across thousands of kilometres away.

The dinosaurs, inured to a warm climate, are not adapted to the freezing temperatures and cold winter. The trees can no longer bear their weight and they fall down. At the same time, the volcanic eruptions darken the sky and block most of the sun’s light and heat.

Dinosaurs were killed off by changes in their climate and from an asteroid strike. It has long been considered one of the biggest extinction events in Earth’s history, not only because of its size but also because of the hugely important role dinosaurs had played in the planet’s ecosystems.
